By Olivia Cheng
For me, 1999 is a year worth remembering. This is the year that I achieved my long time ambition of being a "Scratch Handicapper".
Ever since I started playing golf eight years ago, I always religiously put my scorecard into the Handicap "Score Box" after every round. When I got my first handicap rating, which was 40, it seemed that it would take eternity for me to reach 0 handicap. But my mind was set then, ¡§Eternity or not I am going to get there.¡¨
In April 1999, I won the China Ladies Amateur Open Championship. Actually it was a bitter sweet week, I was sick with the flu. I felt weak and tired and spent all my time in bed after every round, but I was determined to put up a good fight. Luckily, I won. It just proves that with determination one can overcome any obstacles.
All over the world millions are addicted to the game of golf. Why? The reason I guess is that the game is so similar to life. One has to take responsibility of every single shot, there is no one else to blame. Just like life, when playing golf, one cannot expect to achieve good results if one is not physically fit, if one is not determined to overcome difficulties, and if one is not prepared to concentrate on the task on hand.
Golf also helps us to become better persons. We learn about honesty, patience, etiquette, respecting others, and how to conduct themselves as ¡§Ladies¡¨ and ¡§Gentlemen¡¨. Those who are bad tempered, or speak foul language, or toss their cigarette butts anywhere they feel like, or have a tendency to cheat whenever they think they can get away with it, or a little bit greedy (pocketing other people¡¦s in play balls thinking that they are strays is a good example), soon find they have few playing partners. We all need to conduct our everyday life, just like courteous golfers conduct themselves on a golf course. While enjoying ourselves, we also need to take care not to prevent or hinder other from enjoying themselves.
On this occasion of our 6th Anniversary, I would like to thank our members and friends for their support and encouragement. I would also like to specially thank our committee members, who put in so much of their valuable time selflessly working for CLGA.
The united strength of people can move mountains. The future of CLGA depends on the united efforts of every member. May I wish you happy golfing in the future; and please remember, while training up your game, also train up your character. We all hope to uphold the principle of ¡§Enjoyment is for all, not just for ourselves alone¡¨.
